Head coach Andy Flower conceded that Pietersen’s usual high-octane confidence might be flagging, but said: “I’m not worried about Kevin. He is a strong enough person and definitely a good enough player to come through it and I’d be surprised if he didn’t contribute at the Wanderers.

“He made some significant contributions in Centurion and then he has had a couple of very quiet Test matches.
